CONSHOHOCKEN TOURNAMENT
...
East Abington 10, Conshohocken 0
EA advanced to the Semi-finals of the Conshohocken Tournament with a 10-0 victory over the host team. EA’s 10 year-old tournament team has now advanced to the 2nd round in each of the 3 tournaments they have played in this season. Andrew Ciarlone turned in one of EA’s best pitching performances of the tournament season, going 4 2/3 innings and holding Conshohocken scoreless with only one hit and striking out 7 of the 15 batters he faced. Ciarlone also factored in the offense, going 3-4, scoring 2 runs and knocking in 2 RBI’s. EA got started early with 4 runs in the 1st inning, taking advantage of 4 walks issued by the Conshohocken pitcher. After going down 1-2-3 in the 2nd inning, EA scored another 4 runs in the 3rd inning. Three straight singles by Michael DeValentino, Andres Madden and Evan Misinkavitch powered the offense in the 3rd. The game was ended by the 10 run mercy rule in the bottom of the 5th inning. Christian Geer doubled to drive in Andrew Ciarlone who scored the 10th run. EA will meet the still to-be-determined winner of Pool C on Saturday, July 25th at 11:30am at Conshohocken’s Sutcliffe Park.

Plymouth 14, East Abington 10
Stop reading now if you have heard this story before: EA got behind early to Plymouth, down 2-10 after 3 innings, battled back in the top of the 4th to close the gap to 8-10, but eventually lost 10-14. EA did score the first runs of the game, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st. A walk by Andrew Ciarlone and singles by TJ O’Reilly, Christian Geer and Andres Madden lead to the 2 runs. However, EA’s pitching struggled early as Plymouth scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning with EA pitchers issuing 6 walks and Plymouth hitting two homeruns, including a grand slam. Plymouth added another 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning including a 3 run homerun. EA’s offense finally revved up in the top of the 4th, scoring 6 runs with a 3 run homerun over the left field fence by Christian Geer. Unfortunately, Plymouth was able to answer with one run in the bottom of the 4th and 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th. EA did score solo runs in the top of the 5th and 6th innings, but it wasn’t enough to dig out of the early hole.

UPPER MORELAND 12, EAST ABINGTON 2
Unfortunately, EA finally ran up against a team that was determined not to give EA even a sliver of a chance to come back. Upper Moreland ended EA’s run in the Little League tournament with an offensive barrage that over-whelmed EA. Although Upper Moreland was a beneficiary of EA one error that extended an inning, they did the damage by banging out 12 hits while scoring 3 in the 1st, 3 in the 2nd, and 5 in the 3rd . Upper Moreland completed the 10 run victory in the bottom of the 4th inning with a lead-off triple and a groundout to force in the final run. Offensive highlights were scarce for EA. Christian Geer was 2 for 2, Andrew Ciarlone knocked in a run and Andres Madden stole home on a passed ball. EA’s 10 year-old team will compete in one more tournament this summer, the Conshohocken Tournament. EA opens up play Saturday morning, 9 am, against Marple Township. On Sunday, they take on Plymouth at 11 am. All games are at the Conshohocken Little League Complex located in Sutcliffe Park, W. 10th Ave & Freedly St. in Conshohocken.

HORSHAM 8, EAST ABINGTON 4
In a return to a familiar script, the 10 year-old EA tournament team was unable to overcome an early deficit. Horsham started the top of the 1st by batting around and scoring 4 runs. They followed up with two more runs in the top of the 2nd to stretch their lead to 6-0. EA proved, once again, able to make opposing coaches squirm when EA scored 4 in the bottom of the 3rd inning. After EA’s first two batter reached base, Christian Geer and TJ O’Reilly hit back-to-back doubles to bring in 3 runs. TJ O’Reilly eventually scored on a bases loaded walk by Andres Madden. Unfortunately, Horsham was able to come back with 2 runs in the top of the 5th, getting the most from hitting only a single in the inning. EA was unable to score again in their final two at-bats. Up next for the team is Upper Moreland. The game is at Flourtown’s Bysher Field on Wednesday, July 15th at 6pm.

ORELAND 6, EAST ABINGTON 3
Here’s a recap of the Oreland game, along with a picture: East Abington’s comeback fell short as Oreland prevailed, 6-3, in EA’s final 1st round tournament game. Despite the loss, the 10 year-old team advanced to the elimination round for the 2nd straight year. Oreland got on the board first with 2 runs in the first inning. EA was able to get one back in the top of the 3rd when Hunter Mackenzie got the first hit for EA and then scored thanks to consecutive hits by Andres Madden and Evan Misinkavitch. Oreland answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the 3rd, aided by 3 EA errors. EA nibbled away with a run apiece in the top of the 4th and 5th innings. Unfortunately, the offense was unable to get enough going to bring home a win. EA’s next game will be against Horsham on Monday, July 13th at 6pm. The game is at Horsham’s home field, Deep Meadow Park.

East Abington 15, Conshohocken 7
The East Abington 10 year-old tournament team improved to 2-1 in the 1st round of the District 22 tournament with a 15-7 win over Conshohocken. Conshohocken brought their bats out early as they jumped to a 5-1 lead in the 1st inning. They tacked on 2 more in the 2nd inning to widen their lead to 7-1. After starting pitcher TJ O’Reilly settled in to retire 6 of 7 batters faced in the 3rd and 4th innings, EA got the offense going in the bottom of the 4th. EA scored 4 times in the 4th inning to close the deficit to 7-5. In the 5th, EA broke the game wide open, sending 15 batters to the plate and scoring 10 runs. TJ O’Reilly and Mike DiValentino had 2 hits apiece in the 5th and John Contoudis ripped a double down the left field line. Evan Misinkavitch closed out the game by striking out the side in the top of 6th. Christian Geer highlighted EA’s improving defense recording 4 put-outs and 3 assists at 2nd base. Final 1st round game is against Oreland at Alverthrope Field on Thursday at 7pm.

EAST ABINGTON 4, CHELTENHAM 1
The East Abington 10 year-old tournament team prevailed over Cheltenham in a tight, well-played game. EA got on the board in the bottom of the 1st with 2 runs thanks to a double by Evan Misinkavitch and a ground-out RBI by Christian Geer. After a shaky first inning, Cheltenham’s pitcher retired 6 straight EA batters and kept EA off the board through the 4th inning. Meanwhile, EA’s Michael DiValentino pitched a great game, going 4 2/3 innings, walked none, scattered 5 hits and only gave up one run, via a sacrifice fly in the top of the 5th inning. EA played great defense behind DiValentino, with no errors and keeping runners from advancing extra bases. In the bottom of the 5th, EA got some insurance with 2 runs driven in by John Contoudis on an infield single. Evan Misinkavitch closed out the game and EA earned their first Little League tournament win.

HATBORO 7, EAST ABINGTON 5
The East Abington 10 year-old tournament team opened the District 22 Tournament with a tough loss at Hatboro. EA started a little slow and the team was down 3-0 after 1 ½ innings. After getting on the board with a run in the bottom of the 2nd, Hatboro scored twice in the top of the 3rd to take a 5-1 lead. EA got the offense going in the 3rd, with the middle of the order delivering 4 consecutive hits, including a double by John Contoudis, which drove in the first 2 runs of the inning. EA scored a total of 4 runs to tie the game at 5-5. Hatboro answered with solo runs in the top of the 4th and 5th innings, and EA was unable to mount any significant threats in their last 3 at-bats. Up next is a home game on July 6th against local rival Cheltenham. The game starts at 5:30 at Alverthorpe.

EAST ABINGTON 11, HUNTINGDON VALLEY 4
East Abington’s 10 year-old tournament team, managed by Paul Ciarlone, started competition in Southampton’s Michael Varano Tournament on Thursday, June 25th with a 11-4 win over Huntingdon Valley.  The EA offense was led by Andres Madden, 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and 3 runs scored, Andrew Ciarlone, 2 for 2 plus 2 walks and 2 runs scored & 2 RBI’s and John Contoudis, 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s.  After EA scored 4 runs in the top of the 1st, Huntingdon Valley came back to tie it at 4 after the 2nd inning.  EA’s Andres Madden and Michael DiValentino combined to shut out HV over the final 4 innings as EA scored in the top of the 3rd to take the lead for good.

EAST ABINGTON 9, SOLESBURY 6
East Abington’s 10 year-old team continued their run in the Southampton’s Michael Varano Tournament with a hard fought 9-6 win over Solesbury.  Solesbury took the early lead, scoring in each of the 1st three innings and leading 4-0 after 2 ½ innings.  Solesbury powered their offense behind walks, bunts and some mental errors on the part of the EA defense.  However, EA kept the damage to a minimum as Solesbury stranded 9 runners, leaving the bases loaded in each of the first 3 innings.  EA’s bats got going in the bottom of the 3rd as the team batted around and scored 7 runs.  After a scoreless 4th, Solesbury scored twice in the top of the 5th to get within 1 run.  EA answered with 2 of their own in the bottom of the 5th lead by a Christian Geer double and a single by TJ O’Reilly.  EA closed out the game in the top of the  6th with two outs recorded thanks to baserunning lapses on the part of Solesbury.  TJ O’Reilly recorded the final out after Catcher Andrew Ciarlone alertly caught a foul tip and threw down to O’Reilly at first.  The Solesbury runner had left the bag, not realizing that a caught foul tip is a live ball.

TANEY 10, EAST ABINGTON 8
East Abington’s 10 year-old team dropped the final first round game of Southampton’s Michael Varano Tournament, losing to Taney 10-8. Despite the loss, East Abington secured their bracket’s #2 seed and a spot in the semi-finals. East Abington will face Roslyn at 6pm on Tuesday, June 30th. Against Taney, EA started slowly and faced a 3-0 deficit after 2 ½ innings. In the bottom of the 3rd, EA got on the board with 2 runs powered by back to back doubles from Michael DiValentino and Andres Madden. EA’s scoring continued in the 4th and the team took the lead, 6-5. Big hits in the 4th came from Dan Erhlich, Kyle Schoener and Andres Madden. Unfortunately, errors cost EA in the top of the 5th when Taney re-took the lead 10-6, helped by EA’s 3 unearned runs. EA battled back to scored 1 in the 5th (thanks to a Hunter MacKenzie single) and 1 in the 6th (thanks to a triple by Andrew Ciarlone), but it wasn’t enough against a talented Taney team.

SEMI FINAL: ROSLYN 9, EAST ABINGTON 7 (ELIMINATED)
East Abington’s ability to come back wasn’t enough to beat Roslyn in the semi-finals of the Southampton Michael Varano Tournament. Roslyn was able to score 8 runs in the 1st two innings behind 6 walks, 1 hit batter, and an East Abington error which caused only 3 of the 8 runs to be earned. Despite being down 8-2 after 3 innings, East Abington came back in the 4th with 4 runs. East Abington took advantage of 5 walks issued by Roslyn pitching as well as a Christian Geer single and an error by Roslyn. EA was able to score again in the 5th, but was unable to overcome the early 8-1 deficit. It was a good run by the team to get to the semi-finals and now the 10 year-olds will move onto the Little League District 22 tournament.

WHITEMARSH 13, EAST ABINGTON 2
East Abington's 11 year old's run in the Districts ended in Conshochocken with a 13-2 loss to defending District Champ Whitemarsh. Starter Ryan Kremp was the unlucky beneficiary of 10 unearned runs in the inning and two thirds he pitched. By the end of the fourth inning East Abington's pitching had just given up 1 earned run. Unfortunately, against a powerhouse like Whitemarsh they couldn't afford to give away any runs. The game ended on a foul tipped third strike although the bat seemed to graze against the catchers glove. The team finished 2-2 in the first round, for a second year in a row. Last year that got EA into the 2nd round. This year it was not to be. Despite the loss the kids agreed they had fun during the tournament. East Abington congratulates the 11 year olds on a great effort.

EAST ABINGTON 9, FLOURTOWN 7
In a must win game, East Abington's 11 year olds beat Flourtown 9-7, at Bysher Field in Flourtown tonight. The game was scarred when East Abington's Lee Markman was hit but a pitch on his left arm. Unable to continue, Lee left the game and was taken to a hospital. Unfortunately the news was not good. Lee's arm was broken, thus ending his season early. With the score 7-6 EA going into the last inning, and runner's on second and third and two outs, centerfielder, Tommy Reichelt lined a double to deep right center that gave EA the cushion they needed. In for his first appearance in Tournament play, pitcher, Ryan Kremp came in to pitch the final 1 2/3's innings and closed the game in dramatic fashion. With two outs Flourtown hit a ball that fell between center and right field. Tommy R. picked it up and threw the Flourtown runner trying to stretch a single into a double at second base.

ORELAND 10, EAST ABINGTON 7
In a game that featured four lead changes Oreland beat the 11 year olds from East Abington 10-7. The boys from EA took an early 1-0 lead on an RBI triple from cleanup hitter Jeffrey Gratz. Oreland answered back with 4 runs of their own in their bottom half of the first. After taking a 4-2, Oreland had a runner on 3rd with one out in their bottom half of the inning. Jake Thygeson made a deep catch in left on a screaming line drive with Oreland’s runner from third scoring. East Abington appealed the runner left early and the runner was called out. That seemed to bring life to the East Abington kids as they scored 4 unanswered runs over the next two innings taking a 6-4 lead. Unfortunately for East Abington, Oreland wasn’t finished as they tied the game with a two run homerun from their leadoff hitter. They later took the lead for good as East Abington could catch up. A homerun to dead center from Jack Larini in the 6th inning was all they could produce as the dropped to 1-1 in Pool A. East Abington’s next opponent is 0-2 Flourtown at Flourtown on Wednesday, July 8th.

Minors Final - CH-G 8, EA-D 3
On a dreary night at Cheltenham, CH-G (Quinn) defeated EA-D (Schoeller) 8 to 3 in the minors final. After giving up two runs in the bottom of the first, EA-D battled back in the second inning to take a 3-2 lead. However, CH-G was strong defensively and did all of the scoring for the rest of the game. One noteworthy highlight was EA-D outfielder Stephen Korecky depriving CH-G of a possible homerun when he caught a towering fly ball only a few feet from the left field fence in the fifth inning. The loss in the final ended EA-D’s 9 game winning streak

You couldn't ask for a more exciting Championship Game in the Baseball Majors Division than the one played today in front of a large crowd of East Abington and Cheltenham supporters. Tied 3-3 in the top of the 6th inning with 2 outs and nobody on base for CH-B (McGinley), leadoff hitter Pat Mc. drew a walk on 5 pitches. That proved to be the beginning of the end for EA-A (Azuelos). Four hits and two hit batters later Cheltenham scored four runs to make what was a close fought game into an insurmountable lead. CH-B pitcher Calvin struck out EA hitter Aaron Z. to give CH-B to Baseball Majors Division title with a 7-3 win.

SEMI FINALS: EA-A 5, CH-E 4
...
...
In a back and forth semi-final game EA-A (Azuelos) edged out CH-E (O'Grady) 5-4 in an well played game. East Abington took an early 1-0 lead on a lead off triple in the first inning from Alex Winshel. He was then driven in on a sacrifice fly by Jack McCauley, the first runs given up by the Cheltenham squad all playoffs. Cheltenham didn't let the lead stand for long as they put together four hits to take a 2-1 advantage. The lead stood until East Abington scored three runs in the 4th inning on a couple of walks, some hit batters and a key hit from Matt Bevilacqua. Once again, Cheltenham came right back with some big hits and after four the game was tied at 4. With no scoring in the fifth inning the game went to the sixth and final inning tied. Lead off hitter Shane McCarthy worked a walk and after one out found himself at 3rd base. Jack McCauley then hit a ball to the pitcher who double clutched to first. With McCarthy going for home the pitcher threw high to the catcher with McCarthy just sliding under the tag. With the top of the Cheltenham order coming up in the home half of the sixth, pitcher, Jack Larini started by striking out the lead off hitter. The next hitter hit a ball off the bat handle right to Larini who threw to first for the second out. The next hitter hit a soft pop up to Larini who stumbled in to catch it. The ball then fell out of the glove. With some hope and Cheltenham's cleanup hitter up, Jack Larini got the batter to hit a sharp ground ball to Lee Markman at first who took the ball and touched the bag for the win. The win puts East Abington-A in the Majors Division Championship game this Saturday against the winner of the CH-B (McGinley) and NEO-A (Muller) game on Thursday night.

Memorial Weekend Fun Game
The afternoon started with a "draft" in which Fitz and Dave divided up the kids to make the teams reasonably even, and quick issuing of the rules. Anyone over majors age had to bat with their opposite hand and older pitchers lobbed from the mound. Other than that, normal game rules applied and the kids had to self-manage their lineups, etc. Poetic justice seemed to be the day's theme as catchers stole home on catchers, little brothers reached base safely on errors by big brothers, the juniors developed a new respect for switch hitters, and Dave Mindel, the self-proclaimed "old coach," beat some young players in a sprint. My personal favorite was hearing one of the kid-managers lament that "no one was listening!" ~ welcome to our world, sweetie! The teams grew throughout the day as more kids showed up. Many had the opportunity to try positions that they never had (and probably never will again!) The winning team finished only one run up, so it was more fun than competitive. After the game, there was a three-round Home Run Derby/Distance Contest. My Michael had 2 over the fence to win the Derby (older kids), just beating out Walter Golden who hit 1 over. The younger kids winner was a 9 year old named Charlie. I don't know his last name but he was consistent and hit it to the middle outfield for the win in the Distance Contest. Iron Man kudos to Steve Lyness for umpiring in full protective gear in what? 120-degree heat!? Players snacked on Tastycake, candy, soft pretzels and water ice and all went home happy and sugared up. ~Anna Fitz

Session 2: Sat, April 11th, Basics and Finer Points. Tentatively at 9am (but open to 1pm, too). I plan to promote this for anyone, but mostly for more experienced umpires to brush up. (I also have the 90-foot mechanics video, which is also good.) Please provide any suggestions or indicate any preferences or availability by Feb 12th. I'll be publishing the info in early March. All leagues are welcome and invited. Once I'm set on the times, I'll forward out flyers for distribution as desired. I would welcome any district umpires who would like to come to present and, weather permitting, conduct on-field training. Ron Camp graciously obtains the local church hall basement for these sessions and, even if weather is bad, we can still lay out bases and talk mechanics. I'm attempting to build a syllabus for training at our website at: http://umpires.cheltenhamlittleleague.org/. Look for the "The Basics". The very rough syllabus is at the bottom of the page. (This site is a wiki, so if you would like to edit it, let me know. It's very easy.)

Hitting Fastpitch Softball by Michele Smith
Hitting Fastpitch Softball By Michele Smith There are many components of a good fastpitch softball swing. Let’s cover some of the essential parts you have to do right to help you become a good hitter. Remember hitting is complex, and just because you have a good swing does not mean you will have a high batting average. You must be mentally prepared, coachable, believe that you can do it, and most importantly, swing at good pitches or strikes. If you swing at balls, you will be helping the pitcher get yourself out! Always be positive and look at hitting as an opportunity for you to help your team win! THE STRIDE It is important to take a short and soft stride. If your stride is too long, the ball will look like it is moving because the level your eyes are on will drop. This gives the appearance that the ball is moving or rising. Keep the stride soft as well; this will help keep your balanced. THE SWING Always take a full cut. If you are going to swing, then swing! Do not hesitate or be too slow with your swing. The plan of the swing should be slightly downward, this will help you hit the ball on a line. An upward swing will create pop-ups. THE HEAD Keep you head over your body for good balance. Always watch or track the ball as the pitch is thrown and as you swing, keep your head down. You can’t hit what you can’t see, so make sure that both your eyes are on the ball all the way to contact. No pulling your head out and looking for mom in the stands!
